Stimulus Money Given To Colleges And Universities In Hopes Of Improving The Economy
Record enrollments were reported at a time when the unemployed sought to train for new careers and students remained in school longer than they otherwise might have. Colleges And Universities in the United States during this time received billions of dollars in stimulus money directly and indirectly from the federal government.
The stimulus plan, more formally known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, helped families too. It did so through financial aid to help pay for studies at colleges and universities at a time when students and families might least be able to afford the training they might need.
Colleges and universities benefited from stimulus money that, as part of making college more affordable and accessible, included an expanded federal Pell Grant program for students who might not otherwise afford higher education. At colleges and universities, the infusion of stimulus money was seen in the increased number of faculty members, the expanded degree programs and the new research opportunities that came available. Some of the stimulus money went to:
Health Care degrees. Nursing degree programs at colleges and universities have seen some of the greatest expansion over the past year or so. Professional associations encouraged nurses to recognize entry level trends in the field and advance their degrees. More recently, health care reform has spurred those in the industry to look at how nurses might pitch in where demand for primary care physicians becomes overwhelming. The federal government provided states stimulus money to train health care workers and, with help from this money, an Illinois institution joined many that have established “accelerated” nursing degree programs where working nurses might more easily advance their degrees.
Green degrees. President Barack Obama in 2008 vowed to spend $150 billion over 10 years to create “green collar” jobs and, by 2009, more than 113 new academic programs that were focused on sustainability were reportedly announced or created at technical schools, colleges and universities. “Green” College And University degrees offer students opportunities to train for careers in green building, solar energy and more. Many of the newly added programs at colleges and universities were paid for at least in part with federal stimulus money.
Research grants. Colleges and universities received millions of dollars in stimulus money to carry out research in areas such as computer security, the beginnings of the universe, how different genders react to influenza and more.
Now, the stimulus program is expected to end as far as education goes. As of November, most community colleges didn’t have a clue as to how they might balance their budgets, a study from an Alabama university’s Education Policy Center showed. An article in Community College Review cited expectations on the part of 35 states that are anticipating enrollment increases averaging 9 percent.
The President has been a strong supporter of community colleges, and the Vice President’s wife is a leader among them. The end of Obama’s stimulus program for education comes at a time when stimulus beneficiaries graduating from the country’s community colleges and entering in-demand fields might be among those who contribute most immediately to boosting the economy.
For those who fear rising education costs due to the end of the stimulus money, there are many online schools that offer a wide variety of Online College degree programs that might be more appealing than attending traditional college. While students with 4 year degrees and better might expect to make more money over the course of a lifetime than those with the 2 year degrees that community college graduates earn, there are exceptions that have to do with occupation. What’s more, there are some graduates with Associate’s degrees who might earn more money more quickly than their Bachelor’s degree counterparts, thereby helping to get the economy back on its feet more swiftly as well.
