Tips to Finding the Perfect School for your College Bound Student
It’s that time of year for high school seniors to start thinking about their future and what road they want to take in expanding their education. For students who have decided to continue their education now is the time when the pressure is on to begin the application process. For students who didn’t get the head start at the end of their junior year narrowing down schools, time will be tight. If you are a high school senior of parent of one then read the following tips to make sure you or your child is on the way to a bright future.
The first step is to research and narrow down the choice of schools. Schools on your final list should only be ones that meet all of your criteria. Such criteria includes, academic programs, abroad programs, campus activities, location, and of course the cost of tuition. A good way to research Colleges is by utilizing online search engines geared towards finding ideal schools, attending college fairs, or visiting your own high school guidance office. Applying to schools who don’t not meet your criteria is not only a waste of your and the schools time, but you could also be potentially taking away a spot form a student who really wants to go to that particular college or university. Another reason you should avoid applying to numerous schools is the application costs. The application fee to apply to one college or university can range anywhere from $20-$75 dollars.
Once you have narrowed down your school selections you must gather all of their required information starting with the application. Make sure you fill in all information neatly and accurately. In addition to your general application information you must also include recommendation letters from at least two different teachers or other professionals, an essay if required, transcript (usually sent by your guidance counselor) and any SAT or ACT scores.
At some point during your school research and application process you want to make an effort and take time out to visit the college campuses. Making a campus visit will give you a better idea of the college or university’s environment and will help you in your decision between schools. Choosing the right school does not just depend on the right programs and major’s offered it also is very important to choose a school in an environment where you feel safe and comfortable.
Before you send out your final put together application you want to call the financial aid offices of each school and make sure you have access to the their required forms. Once you have done that it’s time to send out your applications. Every school has a different due date for applicant so make sure you know the date for each school you are applying to. While you are waiting for school responses you don’t want to lose momentum, so take that time to research and college scholarships you might be eligible for.
After that it’s waiting time, but don’t get nervous because if you have followed these simple steps than your ideal school will surely have a spot for you come next fall!
