When is the best time for my 15/16 yr old son to gather college information?
My son is about to turn 16 and is in 10th grade. He thinks he is decided already about where he will be going to college. I need to see oppinions on when the best time is for me to send away to other Colleges/Universities to show him all the different options out there. Should I send away now and try to nip his preconcieved decision in the bud?, or should I just wait till next year..?
I would have to say Junior year. You can go see the campus for most colleges, and also read up on others. You can also go ahead and start asking for letters or recommendation. Junior year is also a good year to start because thats also when representatives from different colleges go to different schools to talk to some of the junior students about their college and what they have to offer. I believe it would be a great advantage to start junior because, then all of that information that was received and gathered from the different college representatives is still fresh. As apposed to senior year when you can’t remember what it was they said. Or what was the schools pros and cons, and so on. And because you can’t remember chances are you will have to do research again on those same schools. Not to mention you would be really pressured because, the best time to start sending in applications is around November, October, and December . The earlier you send the applications, the higher the chances of you being accepted. So if you still have a lot of research to do and schools to see by that time chances are you’ll only be ready to send in the applications by January, February, March, April, and if you start running into problems who knows, you might be sending an apllication out in may or june.
In conclusion, i would advise in starting the search for colleges during junior year.
p.s.
Not to mention that after application is sent and acceptance letter is received. And thats the college you want, then you still need to take care of financial aid.
