Adelphi University to Host Nyssa Brown’s New York Debut in Outlaws, Death, and Tarnished Love on Friday, November 12, 2010
Adelphi University is pleased to host Outlaws, Death, and Tarnished Love, featuring award-winning folk singer Nyssa Maria Brown, Adelphi Assistant Professor Georgia A. Newlin, and Music major Taylor Ackley ’12 on the rarely seen dobro guitar. The performance will take place in the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (AU PAC) Concert Hall on Friday, November 12, at 7:30 p.m. A children’s sing along entitled Knick Knack Paddy Whack! will take place the following day, Saturday, November 13, at 11:00 a.m. with the same performers.
Ms. Brown is a Minneapolis-based singer/songwriter inspired by traditional music of the world. In October of 2000 she released her first CD, “Packwood or Paradise,” and is currently recording a CD of lullabies. Ms. Brown has spent time in Namibia and South Africa teaching and learning music and also participated in Eastman School of Music’s Umculo: The Kimberley Project. A regionally and nationally recognized teacher, Ms. Brown taught elementary school vocal and general music at Park Spanish Immersion School in St. Louis Park, Minnesota from 1998-2007 and currently serves as music education coordinator for Minnesota’s Perpich Center for Arts Education.
In 2004, Ms. Brown was recognized as one of 10 finalists for the Minnesota Teacher of the Year award. Additionally, she received a prestigious Milken Educator Award in 2004 and served as Minnesota’s representative to the National Education Association Foundation’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2006.
An assistant professor of music, Dr. Newlin coordinates Adelphi’s music education program. She has taught in early childhood and public school elementary music positions for 15 years and at the collegiate level for 10. Currently, Dr. Newlin is called upon as a conductor and adjudicator for elementary, middle, and high school choral festivals. Her articles and choral octavo reviews have been published in the Choral Journal and the Kodály Envoy, as well as in regional publications. She is a faculty member of the Summer Kodály Institute at Indiana University as well as the Kodály Institute at James Madison University. Dr. Newlin is immediate past president of the Organization of American Kodály Educators and is a member of The VoiceCare Network.
The roots of the music presented at this concert come from the voices, lives, and spirits of our ancestors. Passed down largely by aural tradition, these songs were shared from person to person and remembered without the use of recording equipment or music notation. The songs to be performed have roots in many cultures around the world, and the melodies, rhythms, and storylines have been spun together to create what is often called Unites States or American folk music. These songs are intended to create visions of outlaws, pioneers, farmers, and other iconic American characters that made up the U.S. during its early years. These songs share lessons, make work easier, share the heart’s longing, provide entertainment, sing praise, and express the soul.
Individual tickets for this event are on sale now for $10 – $30 depending on seating. To learn more about AU PAC’s 2010-2011 season, please visit aupac.adelphi.edu or call the AU PAC Box Office at (516) 877-4000.
