Interesting Facts About Glendale, AZ
The city of Glendale, Arizona, is perhaps best known as the home city for a National Football League team and a National Hockey League franchise. However, the community is also host to a number of other interesting institutions and shopping centers.
The Arizona Cardinals of the NFL play in the University Of Phoenix Stadium, which opened in 2006. One of the most historic Super Bowls ever played took place in the 63,400-seat facility on Feb. 3, 2008, as the New York Giants defeated the previously-undefeated New England Patriots 17-14.
The stadium also possesses a fully-retractable natural-grass playing surface that allows the grass to be moved outside and receive sunlight when it is not in use inside the facility.
The NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes call Jobing.com Arena home, a facility adjacent to the University of Phoenix Stadium. Jobing.com Arena opened in December 2003 and seats 17,125 for hockey games and between 18-19,000 for basketball games, concerts and other events.
Downtown Glendale has been voted “Arizona’s Antique Capital” by readers of papers located throughout the state, as there are more than 70 antique and specialty stores located here.
Midwestern University was founded in 1900 as the first medical school in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. The city is also home to Glendale Community College and the Thunderbird School of Global Management.
Arrowhead Towne Center is a shopping mall located in Glendale that opened in 1993. Jordin Sparks, who claimed the title of American Idol during the show’s sixth season, worked in the mall in her younger years.
Metro Light Rail’s Glendale High Capacity/Light Rail Transit Project will connect Phoenix and Glendale and is expected to open in 2026. This will be the first time the cities have been connected by rail since the Phoenix Street Railway ran between the communities from 1911-26.
Former Major League Baseball catcher Paul Lo Duca played college baseball at Glendale Community College before transferring to Arizona State University. Major League Soccer player Daniel Cruz lived in Glendale and attended Ironwood High School.
Jennie Garth, who played the role of Kelly Taylor in Beverly Hills, 90210, spent most of her teen years in Glendale. Job for a Cowboy, a death metal band, hails from Glendale.
